UK Truck Driver (HGV) Visa Sponsorship 2026: Eligibility, Salary & How to Apply

UK Truck Driver (HGV) Visa Sponsorship 2026: Eligibility, Salary & How to Apply

The UK has had a well-publicised HGV (heavy goods vehicle) driver shortage for years, and haulage firms do recruit internationally through the Skilled Worker visa. But the rules tightened significantly in 2025, and truck-driver sponsorship is now conditional and time-limited. Before you spend money chasing a “UK truck driver visa,” you need to understand exactly when it’s possible — which this honest 2026 guide explains, along with salary and the application steps.

The eligibility reality (read this first)

Large goods vehicle drivers fall under SOC code 8214. This is a sub-degree (RQF level 3–5) role — and since 22 July 2025, sub-degree roles can only be sponsored under the Skilled Worker route if the occupation appears on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or Temporary Shortage List (TSL), or under limited continuing-employment transitional rules.

Critically, the ISL and TSL are due to be removed by the end of 2026 unless renewed. So whether you can be sponsored as an HGV driver depends entirely on whether SOC 8214 is on the live list at the time of your application — and that window may be closing. Always check the current list on GOV.UK before relying on this route.

    Salary

The going rate for large goods vehicle drivers is around £28,200 per year. Where the role qualifies via the ISL, a reduced salary floor applies (commonly around £30,960 or a percentage-based figure) — you must always be paid the higher of the applicable threshold and the going rate. Salary-compliance rules are strict, including from April 2026 a requirement to meet the threshold in each pay period.

    Requirements

    • A valid HGV/LGV driving licence, with your foreign licence recognised/exchanged under DVLA rules.
    • A Certificate of Sponsorship from a UK haulage employer holding a sponsor licence.
    • English at CEFR B2 (required for new applicants from January 2026).
    • £1,270 maintenance funds (held 28 days) unless your sponsor certifies maintenance.
    • A criminal record certificate and TB test where applicable.

Important for families: workers sponsored under the Temporary Shortage List generally cannot bring a partner or children.

    How to apply

    1. Find a UK haulage/logistics employer that holds a sponsor licence and is willing to sponsor — and confirm SOC 8214 is currently sponsorable.
    2. Receive your Certificate of Sponsorship with the correct occupation code and salary.
    3. Apply online on GOV.UK within 3 months of receiving the CoS; pay the fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
    4. Attend a biometrics appointment and submit your documents.

    Avoiding scams

    • No agent can guarantee a UK visa — the Home Office decides, and the route may not even be open for drivers when you apply.
    • Genuine employers never charge you for a job offer or Certificate of Sponsorship.
    • Be very wary of “guaranteed UK trucking visa” adverts asking for upfront fees.
